Making space in your home and deciding to declutter to create that additional space can be an emotional process as letting go of items can be difficult.
Keep those items that you use and enjoy but consider decluttering the items that are piling up in corners, crowding your closets and making surfaces unmanageable.
7 Questions to ask yourself about items you are holding onto:
- What could you do with the space your clutter is taking up?
- Do these items fit your current lifestyle?
- Perhaps take a photo of these items so that you can keep the memory but let the items go?
- Why are you holding on to these items (i.e. sentimental reasons, guilt, potential use, etc)?
- Are these items useful and/or bring you joy?
- Could you just keep one or two of a category and feature them in your home)?
- If you are not using an item, maybe someone else in need could use it?
Simplifying your life increases mindfulness, lowers stress and allows you to invest more time on yourself and spend more time with others.
“It will feel first like who you are is being ripped away but eventually you’ll find that mourning is just another word for making space.” (Whitney Hanson)
